Will Brno Become the Next Biotech Hub in the EU? (Bude Brno Budouci Stred Biotechnologie?)

September 15, 2008

As stated by the Washington Post, Brno will be a new center of biotechnology industry in the near future. The Czech Republic is attempting to compete with long-established biotech hubs in California and Asia. As Roman Onderka, Brno’s mayor, said, “Brno will connect industry, education and infrastructure to create a suitable environment for biotechnology companies.”

So far, there are 60 biotechnology companies in the Czech Republic located near Prague and Brno. Brno is the country’s second biggest city and it is currently partnering with Mayo Clinic, a research center for treating rare medical cases. The chief macroeconomic strategist at CSOB bank, Tomas Sedlacek, stated that this city will probably play a strong role in medicine and research and it may become the “hospital of Europe.”

The cost of this project is estimated to $500 million Czech crowns and some money will come from the EU as well. Brno will also include a “Medipark” life science campus at Masaryk University that would focus on biotech and drug development. The new International Clinical Research Centre will become one of the EU’s largest biotech and medical research projects. According to Dr. Tomas Kara, the centre’s chief, “there are not many centers in the world that offer the combination of basic science, preclinical research, and development of drugs.”

The new center will be fully running in 2010, and it will provide tools and training for scientists around the world. Brno is conveniently located in between Prague and Vienna, thus, providing a great location for many scientists in Europe. This city has already attracted other technology companies such as IBM, Honeywell and Siemens, thus, the Czech government expects more companies to join them.

So do you think too that Brno will become the new Silicon Valley of Medicine and Biotechnology?

Brnensky starosta, Roman Onderka, rekl, “Brno bude spojovat prumysl, vzdelani a infrastrukturu, coz vytvori vhodne prostredi pro spolecnosti v oblasti biotechnologie.

Myslite si take, ze Brno bude nove Silicon Valley Mediciny a Biotechnologie?
