September 26, 2008
During the communist regime, many great Czechoslovak movies were isolated from the rest of the world or were destroyed. Today, Czech filmmakers have freedom to create their work of art without being afraid of censorship. Czech movies are viewed around the world receiving admirations and prizes. The new movie, called The Karamazovs, was selected by the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) for the best non-English speaking film.
This Czech-Polish movie, directed by Petr Zelenka, was selected from three movie candidates: A Country Teacher by Bohdan Slama, Vaclavs Marhoul’s WWII drama Tobruk, and Karamazovs. Karamazovs is one of many Czech films selected by CFTA since the mid 90’s: I Served the King of England, Lunacy, Something like Happiness, The Wild Bees, Up and Down, Zelary, Dark Blue World, Return of the Idiot, Sekal Has to Die, Forgotten Light, Kolya, and I Thank You for Each New Morning.
The first Czech movie that won this award, since the Velvet Revolution in 1989, was Jan Sverak’s Kolya (1995). Two more Czech movies, Divided We Fall (2000) by Jan Hrebejk and Ondrej Trojan’s Zelary (2004), were nominated but did not win. Czech movie details can be found HERE.
All nominations for the 81st annual Academy Awards will be broadcasted on January 22nd, 2009. The awards will be announced in Los Angeles one month after that.
