2nd of November – All Souls’ Day (2. Listopad – Dusicky)

November 2, 2008

Clanek v CESTINE dole (Kliknete na “Read the rest of this entry”)

Every year, on the 2nd of November, the Czechs and Slovaks celebrate Dusicky a.k.a. Pamatka zesnulych (All Souls’ Day) by putting candles by graves of their loved ones.  All Souls’ Day is celebrated after All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1), and it was introduced by a French abbot Odilio. This holiday, however, is much older. It dates back from the Celtic tradition of Samhain, the Celtic New Year, when our world blends with the world of souls. That night people placed candles by their houses so the souls of the dead could find their ways to them.

All Souls’ Day is celebrated around the world, but in different forms. In the United States, Australia, Ireland, etc., is celebrated under the name Halloween. The name was taken from the original name All Hallow’s Even, and was founded in the 19th century. People in the countries named above believe that on this night, the human world and the world of souls connect and the dead walk freely on Earth in forms of skeletons, mummies, etc., and therefore people wear costumes to blend with them.

This holiday was changed to trick-or-treating, after the tradition when children originally knocked on the door to get fruit, nuts and sweets for the Halloween festival. People also sprinkled salt on the hair of children to protect them against the evil spirits.

As you can see, these holidays are very similar. People in the Czech Republic became fans of Halloween - mainly for carving the pumpkins. iDnes journal article posted an article about Tomas Halik, the President of the Czech Christian Academy, who argued that this new trend is not good and that the Czech Dusicky holiday has more meaning and depth.

However, we believe that whichever holiday you choose, it is better than celebrating none of them. The older we get, the more of our closest ones move on to the “other” world and the more we think of them throughout the year, as we are certain many of you do too.

Listopadu) a zavedl ji francouzky opat Odilio.

Toto jmeno bylo prevzato z originalniho jmena All Hallow’s Even a vznikl v 19. stoleti.

Nicmene, my verime, ze at uz zvolite jakkykoliv svatek, je to lepsi, nez neslavit zadny.
