Is Czech Carp Special? (Je Cesky Kapr Zvlastni?)

December 29, 2008

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na „Read the rest …”)

As you may already know, Czechs and Slovaks eat carp on Christmas Eve as their main dish. Is this the only day that they eat fish then? Peter Gandalovic, Czech Agriculture Minister, started a project to encourage Czechs to eat more fish all year round. Apparently, the Czech Republic is one of the biggest producers of fish but it is a country with the lowest rates of fish consumption (we don’t have information about Slovakia). Moreover, recent news announced that Czech scientists will launch a three-year project to prove that carp meat will improve overall human health. Will these incentives change this sad statistics?

The project lead by Peter Gandalovic will cost the country about 150 million crowns. Hopefully, this project will increase the consumption of freshwater fish and allow more Czechs to benefit from them. Unfortunately, Czechs produce thousands of tons of carp and other freshwater fish but most of them are exported to other countries. The project should bring more awareness to home-grown fish that should be consumed all year round and not just during Christmas.

Last week, Ceske Noviny, announced that Czech scientist will launch a three-year long project that will prove that carp consumption will improve overall health. This study was launched based on a very successful study of the Eskimos in Greenland, who don’t suffer from heart disease. Greenland’s fish consumption is much higher than in the Czech Republic, where Czechs eat only about five kilograms of fish per capita per year. Consequently, about 50 percent of all deaths in the Czech Republic are due to cardiovascular diseases. A similar study was conducted in Sweden at the University in Uppsala, where scientists tested health impacts of salmon and trout and received a prestigious international award in September this year.

The Czech scientists will focus, however, on Czech carp from Vodnany in South Bohemia. The fish will be fed with a special food enriched with beneficial substances that will increase the amounts of the Omega-3 fatty acids in the meat. About 120 patients, who have undergone heart surgery, will be served carp fillets three times a week for 1.5 months. The project will include the Research Institute of Fish Culture and Hydrobiology at the University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice, a local fishery company, and the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) in Prague.

Will the incentive increase fish consumption in the Czech Republic? Additionally, will the carp study show similar or even better results than the Swiss study? Maybe there is something special about Czech carp. Unfortunately, Americans say that carp meat is the worst fish meat ever. Is it true?

Projekt bude zahrnovat Rybářský a hydrobiologický výzkumný ústav Jihočeské univerzity v Českých Budějovicích, místní rybářství a Institutu pro klinickou a experimentální medicínu (IKEM) Praze.

Well, people like to catch carp to get a good

Well, people like to catch carp to get a good feeling but they don’t like to eat it. It is too bony and the meat does not taste as good as other fish meat. Maybe Czech carp meat is better but I did not eat it there.
