Slovaks Are Saying Goodbye to Their Currency (Slováci Se Loučí s Jejich Měnou)

January 3, 2009

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na “Read the rest …”)

Euros (www.moneymatterstome.co.uk)

The year 2009 is not only very significant for the Czech Republic but also for Slovakia. The Czech government took over the EU presidency for the next six months, while Slovakia became the 16th member of the euro zone. Both of the countries separately joined the European Union in 2004. Slovaks are proud of the switch to the euro currency and see this change as a source of their pride and future economic growth. When will the Czechs switch to euro currency then?

The Czech leadership will be tested for the next six months as it assumes the European Union presidency. The country will face lots of important issues such as the worst economic meltdown in Europe, a dispute with Russia, and the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty.

Slovaks were allowed to shift to the euro since the country was able to keep inflation within the euro benchmark. The economic growth was also high enough reaching almost 15% percent in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Many Slovaks are proud for the switch to the euro and hope it will bring economic growth for the country within the union. People will be able to use Slovak crowns until January 16. The National Bank of Slovakia will continue exchanging Slovak crowns for Euros after the 16-day deadline. All banks will automatically convert the old currency to the new one and old Slovak banknotes will then be destroyed.

Slovakia outran other east European nations, such as the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary. It is not the first time Slovakia was ahead of the Czech Republic (see our article about the Visa Waiver Program). So when will the Czechs join the same path of their currency switchover? It will probably take some time due to the present financial crisis in Europe.

Země bude čelit mnoha důležitým a sporným otázkám - nejhorší hospodářské zhroucení v Evropě, spor s Ruskem a ratifikace Lisabonské smlouvy.

Lidé budou moci používat slovenskou korunu do 16. ledna.

Není to poprvé, co Slovensko předběhlo Českou republikou (čtěte náš článek bezvízovém styku s USA). Kdy tedy Češi přejdou na novou evropskou měnu? Bude to patrně trvat nějakou dobu vzhledem k současné finanční krizi v Evropě.
