Woodrow Wilson Monument to Return to Prague (Návrat Pomníku Prezidenta Wilsona do Prahy)

Wilson monument in Prague

How many of you know that there was a monument to an American President in Prague? Yes, there was a statue of Woodrow Wilson located at the main train station in the center of Prague. The monument was destroyed by the Nazis in 1941 and was forgotten for more than 60 years. A new project, initiated by American Friends of the Czech Republic (AFoCR), will renew this monument in Prague to remind us of the close ties the Czech Republic and United States share.

The project was started in 2006 by AFoCR, which in 2008 issued a tender for a sculptor to recreate the statue. AFoCR also hired a law firm to make sure that the restoration conformed to Czech and EU laws. The project was supported by the City of Prague because of their respect for Woodrow Wilson and for their emigrants in the United States, as well as for a follow-up to the initiative of establishing the Tomas Masaryk Memorial in Washington, D.C. that was completed in 2002.

The Wilson Monument in Prague will, therefore, serve as a counterpart to the Masaryk Memorial in the U.S.A, symbolizing shared democratic values by Czechs and Americans and creating a deeper bond between the two countries. Masaryk greatly influenced President Wilson’s views of a post-war settlement, and in September 1918 Masaryk was recognized by the U.S. government as the leader of an Allied country. Two months later he was elected as the President of Czechoslovakia - a new country that for the first time united the Czechs and Slovaks into one state.

The new statue will be cast into bronze and will be unveiled sometime in 2010.  The original statue was also made of bronze and stood on a granite pedestal and it was dedicated on July 4th, 1928.  On the base was the message, both in Czech and English: “The world must be made safe for democracy.” The new monument location will be different due to the fact that the communists built an addition to the train station that took the original monument site in Vrchlicky Park.

The new statue will be an exact replica of the original one. About a year ago, an original plaster bust of the head of the Wilson statue was found in a warehouse of the Czech National Museum in Prague.  This guarantees that the statue will closely resemble the original that was created in 1928. The estimated cost of the rebuilt monument is about $500,000. If you are interested in a tax-deductible contribution, please, visit the AFoCR site: http://www.afocr.org/ for more information.

Masaryk monument in the USA

Nová socha bude obložena bronzem a bude odhalena někdy v roce 2010.
