Based on Czech and Slovak traditions, today is the last day, also known as the twelfth day, of Christmas. The 6th of January is celebrated as the Three Kings Day. During this day you can see children walking the streets caroling in their neighborhoods. It is also common today for many organizations to use this festive day for humanitarian activities to help others.

The three kings of three different countries, also known as wise men from the east, saw a bright star on the night when Christ was born. They followed it to Bethlehem and met the baby Jesus, to whom they gave three gifts: gold, myrrh and frankincense. Their names were Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. Based on biblical stories, the three men represented three life stages - history, presence, and future (young, middle-aged, and old king). The oldest man also had a dark face that represented the shadow of death.

Today, young carolers walk their neighborhoods and sing carols; they don’t bring holy gifts as the biblical characters did. They sprinkle holy water on doorways and write the initials C+M+B with a holy chalk to protect the home. The letters, however, don’t represent names of the kings but a Latin phrase Christus mansionem benedicat (Christ, bless this house).

Origami

This day is also understood as a day of humanitarian collections. Many towns collect money or other items to help other, less fortunate, people at home and also abroad. The Three Kings’ collections are used to help create nursing services for the elderly, mothers with children, shelters, and other centers.

Last year, more than 60 M Czech crowns were collected during the Three Kings day; however, the whole collection during the campaigns amounted to over 400 M Czech crowns. This year, the towns were filled with more than 40,000 volunteers. The city theatre in Brno, Moravia also arranged a concert on January 4th that can be viewed below thanks to the Czech TV1 online broadcast. During the concert, almost 15,000 SMSs were sent that amounted to almost 400,000 Czech crowns in revenue.

The second concert, on January 5th, was organized by the Archdiocesan charity in Prague and took place in the Smetana Hall of the Prague Municipal House. This year’s promotional campaign was in a paper origami theme and we hope it will be even more successful than the one last year.

Na základěna českých a slovenských tradic, dnes je poslední den, známý také jako dvanáctý den Vánoc. Den 6. ledna se slaví jako Den Tří králů. Během dnešního dne můžete zhlédnout děti, které procházejí ulice ve svých čtvrtích a zpívají koledy. Tento den je rovněž dnes využit mnoha organizacemi pro humanitární aktivity na pomoc druhým.

Tři muži - králové ze tří různých zemí, také známí jako mudrci od východu, viděli jasnou hvězdu v noci, kdy se narodil Kristus. Následovali ji do Betléma a potkali malého Ježíška, kterému dali tři dary: zlato, kadidlo a myrhu. Jejich jména byla Kašpar, Melichar a Baltazar. Na základě biblických příběhů, tři muži zastoupovali tři etapy života - historii, přítomnost a budoucnost (mladý muž, muž ve středním věku, a starý král). Nejstarší muž měl také tmavý obličej, který představoval stín smrti.

Dnešní mladí koledníci prochází jejich sousedství a nepřinášejí svaté dary, jako původní biblické postavy, ale zpívají koledy. Kropí svěcenou vodou vchody do domů a píší iniciály K + M + B svatou křídou k ochraně domů. Písmena však nepředstavují jména králů, ale latinské věty Christus mansionem benedicat (Kristus ať žehná tomuto příbytku).

Tento den je také chápán jako den humanitárních sbírek. V mnoha městech se sbírají peněžní nebo jiné dary, které pomohou jiným, méně šťastným, lidem doma i v zahraničí. Sbírky na Tři krále jsou použity na pomoc při vytváření ošetřovatelských služeb pro seniory, matky s dětmi, přístřešky a další střediska.

V loňském roce bylo nashromážděno více než 60 miliónů korun během dne Tří králů, avšak celá kolekce během kampaně činila více než 400 miliónů korun. Letos se města naplnila s více než 40.000 dobrovolníky. Ve městském divadle v Brně, na Moravě, proběhl 4. ledna koncert, které můžete prohlédnout výše v anglické verzi článku a to díky České TV1 vysílání online. Během koncertu bylo odesláno téměř 15.000 SMS zpráv a sbírka za ně dosáhla téměř 400.000 korun v čistých příjmech.

Druhý koncert organizován Arcidiecézní charitou v Praze se konal 5. Ledna ve Smetanově síni pražského Obecního domu. Letošní propagační kampaň byla v tématu papírového origami, a my doufáme, že bude ještě úspěšnější, než v loňském roce.
