It Is Finally Official! (Je To Konečně Oficiální!)

EU Flag (www.timeanddate.com)

Even though the Czech Republic assumed the EU presidency on January 1st, the celebration with EU and Czech government officials was scheduled for the 7th of January. The EU officials spent the whole day in Prague to experience the Czech cuisine and learn about our culture, and in the evening they had a chance to attend a celebration ceremony in the National Theatre in Prague. Many politicians, diplomats and other important figures attended this event; however, the Czech President Vaclav Klaus was absent.

The EU presidency rotation started on the first day of this year. This important day was celebrated with fireworks, and the large metronome in Letna Park in Prague was lit up to measure the time of this six month rotation. Only yesterday was marked as the true beginning, when the EU presidency was officially passed from France to the Czech Republic. A delegation of EU officials visited Prague for an official lunch, meetings, and an evening ceremony in the National Theatre.

The evening started in the foyer of the theatre, where Bruno Le Mairea passed on the EU relay pin to the Vice Minister and the Minister for European Affairs Alexand Vondra.  Then the Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek and the European Commission President Jose Barroso opened the evening with their speeches. The whole program was moderated by actor Petr Forman. The Czech President Vaclav Klaus did not come to the ceremony, but the former President Vaclav Havel and his wife Dagmar Havlova were present.

Are you confused about what it takes to lead the European Union and you also understand the Czech language? The Czech television has prepared a sequence of informative documentary videos that describe activities associated with the Czech Presidency. Here is the first video of this sequence:

EU Vlajka (www.aktualne.cz)

Jste zmateni a nevíte, co to znamená vést Evropskou Unii? Česká televize připravila řadu informativních dokumentárních videí, které popisují aktivity související s českým předsednictvím:
