Manhattan New York

The Czech Republic is getting lots of attention during its EU Presidency. During its six month presidency rotation we can expect many activities organized by the Czech government. The theme for this presidency rotation is “Europe without Barriers.” To prove the barriers can be overcome, two concerts in London and New York were performed by musicians from different countries or by people that have never played together before. The outcome of both concerts was very positive - all musicians were able to communicate with each other without long practice and preparation and the audience was thrilled.

Friends of symphony in London enjoyed a concert by the BBC symphony orchestra lead by Jiri Belohlavek. You could hear pieces from Libuse (from Bedrich Smetana), Fantazie pro housle (from Josef Suk) or Novomestka symfonie (from Antonin Dvorak). The concert was organized by the Czech Embassy in London. Many people in the audience did not necessarily speak Czech nor came from this country. They still enjoyed the music and the atmosphere. One of the people in the audience was, for example, Nicholas Winton, an Englishman that saved so many Czech children of Jewish origin during World War II.

The concert in New York was organized by the Czech Embassy, but also the Czech Center and the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic by OSN and took place in the Czech National Building in Manhattan. It was a little bit more upbeat since the music theme there was jazz this time. Jazz musicians from sixteen European countries got together to play music that they have never played together before. This concert was also a success.

Both concerts proved that people from different countries can find a common way to work together and that Czech music is still valued by many people of different ages and/or backgrounds.

Česká republika získává hodně pozornosti v průběhu svého předsednictví EU. Během šestiměsíční rotace předsednictví můžeme očekávat mnoho aktivit organizovaných českou vládou. Tématem pro tuto rotaci předsednictví je “Evropa bez Bariér.” Dva koncerty v Londýně a New Yorku dokázaly, že se tyto bariéry dají překonat, když byly uspořádány hudebníky z různých zemí nebo muzikanty, kteří nikdy spolu předtím nehráli. Výsledky obou koncertů byly velmi pozitivní - všichni hudebníci byli schopni mezi sebou komunikovat bez dlouhých procvičování a příprav a publikum bylo nadšené.

Přátelé symfonie v Londýně se těšili koncertem Symfonického Orchestru BBC pod vedením Jiřího Bělohlávka. Diváci mohli slyšet kousky z Libuše (od Bedřicha Smetany), Fantazie pro housle (od Josefa Suka) nebo Novoměstské Symfonie (od Antonína Dvořáka). Tento koncert byl organizován Českou ambasádou v Londýně. Mnozí lidé v publiku ani nemluvili česky, anebo nebyli původem z této země. Přesto se těšili z hudby a příjemné atmosféry. Jedním divákem z publika byl například Nicholas Winton, Angličan, který zachránil mnoho českých dětí židovského původu během druhé světové války.

Koncertu v New Yorku byl organizován Českou ambasádou, ale i Českým centrem a Stálou misí České republiky při OSN a proběhl v České národní budově v Manhattanu. Byl trochu rychlejší, protože tentokrát se hrál jazz. Jazzmani z šestnácti evropských zemí nikdy spolu předtím nehráli. I tento koncert byl úspěšný.

Oba koncerty dokázaly, že lidé z různých států mohou najít společnou cestu pro spolupráci, a že česká hudba je stále lákavá pro mnoho lidí různého věku a původu.
