An Atypical Czech Family? (Neobvyklá Česká Rodina?)

February 8, 2009

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na “Read the rest …”)

Stanislav Kubicek (www.bestsail.cz)

How many of you, Czechs and Slovaks abroad, think you have traveled the world? You may have realized that it was hard to assimilate in a new country, especially its customs and language. Would you even imagine traveling around the whole world, especially to less developed countries? Could you even imagine traveling alone, as a couple, with a three-year-old baby? If you don’t want to try this on your own, read about Stanislav a Jitka Kubickovi that have done this for five years and don’t plan to stop any time soon.

Stanislav a Jitka Kubickovi are traveling around the world on their steel boat FERA with their daughter Katerina. They have seen places located quite far from their home country - the Czech Republic. First, they started in the Mediterranean Sea and later they crossed the Atlantic Ocean and for a while ended up in the Caribbean. They had seen people and places that many of us could only dream about. They did not even stop when their daughter was born and together they have crossed the seas and oceans for five years.

Can you even imagine being on a quite small boat for days or even weeks? Stanislav and Jitka just love it! They usually buy canned food, fruits and vegetables at ports along their way and the fresh meat is then Stanislav’s responsibility. Along with fishing, he also enjoys diving and, of course, yachting. Jitka is inclined more to the land and nature. Katerina loves water and boats and feels at home just about everywhere.

Stanislav’s first sea voyage started in 1982. Then he became a diving instructor, spent about one year on the Adriatic and even led a diving group in Bali. In 2001 he bought his own sailboat FERA that he remodeled to fit his needs. A year later he tested FERA out in the Mediterranean Sea where he completed over 3,000 nautical miles. His long journey began in the summer of 2004 and since then he has sailed with his family only taking short breaks when they return to the Czech Republic.

Are you curious  about which places they have seen? So far they visited places like the British Virgin Islands, Bora Bora, Fiji, Indonesia, New Guinea, Niue, Panama, Venezuela, Galapagos, Tahiti, Trinidad, Tonga, Tuamotu, and Vanuatu. This year they plan to explore Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. One of our favorite stories is their trip to Indonesia, when they visited a small village that was not even on the map. Local residents have never seen white people before and reacted with excitement falling to their knees and trying to touch them.  You can read more about their stories and top experiences at their own site www.bestsail.cz, where they keep a detailed diary.

We are sure there are more people like the Kubickovi that love to travel around the world. Their story, however, touched us the most since people from the Czech Republic usually don’t have many experiences sailing or diving. It is probably because of the fact that the country is not surrounded by seas or oceans and these kinds of activities are hard to find. Don’t forget to contact us about other fellow countrymen that also live unusual lives abroad like this family.

Stanislav a Jitka to prostě milují!

Zatím navštívili místa jako Britské Panenské ostrovy, Bora Bora, Fidži, Indonésii, Novou Guineu, Niue, Panamu, Venezuelu, Galapágy, Tahiti, Trinidad, Tongu, Tuamotu, a Vanuatu. V letošním roce hodlají prozkoumat Indonésii, Malajsii a Thajsko.

I would be scared too. Especially since my swimming technique is very bad! I wonder how many Czechs are actually enjoying this. :-)
