St. Valentine’s Day is still a relatively new holiday in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This day was originally associated with love and feelings, but today it is mostly associated with shopping. This year might be different, though. Even though the Czech market is overwhelmed by items associated with this holiday, the Czechs will probably spend less and instead of going to restaurants, they will probably eat at home instead. The neighboring Slovaks won’t shop as much either but a recent public opinion poll showed that it will be probably due to their disfavor of this holiday. No matter what your financial situation is or how you feel about this holiday, there are other meaningful ways that you can celebrate this day and maybe do something good for others.

When this holiday was started, it was associated with love and feelings. Based on one of St. Valentine’s legends, Saint Valentine was killed for his resistance against the Roman Emperor Claudius II that had a hard time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that it was due to the fact that they did not want to leave their families and loved ones, thus, he cancelled all marriages and engagements. Saint Valentine did not respect this decision and secretly married couples that were in love. As a result, he was beaten to death and his head was cut off by direct order of the Prefect of Rome. He died on the 14^th of February and this day is celebrated as St. Valentine’s Day.

Based on Financni Noviny, over 56% of Czechs will eat at home on this day. Even travel agencies and flower stores will be impacted. People are shopping less than last year but the Czechs are not the only ones that will keep their money in the bank. Based on the public opinion poll, most Slovaks are fed up with this holiday and refuse to buy items that are associated with this day. Everything that is pink, red or in the shape of heart will be ignored.

This holiday, however, does not have to be associated with spending for items that will end up in the trash anyway. There are many organizations in the Czech Republic , Slovakia and abroad that use this day to collect donations for children and people in need. You can, therefore, spend very little of your money or your time to make somebody happy, and your help could last longer than just for one day.

Svatý Valentýn je stále relativně novým svátkem v České republice a na Slovensku. Tento den byl původně spojen s láskou a city, ale dnes je většinou spojen s nákupy. Ačkoli, tento rok by mohl být jiný. Přestože je český trh ohromen předměty spojenými s tímto svátkem, Češi zřejmě tento rok utratí méně, a místo chození do restaurací budou pravděpodobně jíst doma. Sousední Slováci také nenakoupí tolik, ale nedávný průzkum veřejného mínění ukázal, že to bude pravděpodobně způsobeno jejich nechutí k tomuto svátku. Nezáleží na tom, jaké je vaše finanční situace, nebo co si myslíte o Dni Svatého Valentýna, protože existují i jiné způsoby, jak můžete smysluplně oslavit tento den a snad i učinit něco dobrého pro ostatní.

Původně tento svátek byl spojen s láskou a pocity. Je založen na jedné z legend svatého Valentýna, který byl zabit pro svou odolnost proti římskému císaři Claudiusu II, který těžce získával vojáky do jeho vojenské armády. Věřil, že to bylo způsobeno tím, že nechtěli opustit své rodiny a blízké, a proto zrušil všechny sňatky a zásnuby. Svatý Valentýn nerespektovaly toto rozhodnutí a tajně zamilované páry oddával. V důsledku toho byl ubit k smrti a jeho hlava byla oříznuta na přímý rozkaz prefektury v Římě. Valentýn zemřel dne 14. Února, a proto tento den se slaví jako Den svatého Valentýna.

Na základě Finančních Novin, více než 56% Čechů bude tento den jíst doma. Dokonce i cestovní kanceláře a květinové prodejny budou ovlivněny. Lidé nakupují méně než loni, ale Češi nejsou jediní, kteří drží své peníze v bankách. Na základě veřejného mínění, většina Slováků je přehlcena tímto svátkem a odmítají nakupovat předměty, které jsou spojeny s tímto dnem. Vše, co je růžové, červené nebo ve tvaru srdce bude ignorováno.

Tento svátek, však nemusí být spojen s nákupy dárků, které stejně jednou skončí v koši. Existuje mnoho organizací v České republice, na Slovensku i v zahraničí, které využívají tohoto dne pro sbírky a dary pro děti a lidi v nouzi. Můžete tedy utratit velmi málo peněz nebo svého času a učinit někoho šťastným a vaše pomoc může trvat déle než jen jeden den.
