On February 23rd, a third year of the international festival against totalitarianism “Mene Tekel” has started. The cultural event accompanying the Czech presidency in the EU Council will last one week. During this time, people will revisit memories and hear testimonies of former political prisoners. The festival will also include artistic reflections of totalitarianism in films, books by living legends, verses of imprisoned men and woman, historians’ views, and much more.

This regime took away not only the rights of millions of people but also their property and freedom. About 200 thousand people were sentenced for political reasons and almost 300 of them were executed. This history is hard to forget and this festival serves as an information tool to people of all ages to inform them about the unforgettable past of the Czech Republic.

The festival is organized by citizen’s groups Art without Barriers, the Capital of Prague, Confederation of Political Prisoners of the Czech Republic, and the Institute for Study of Totalitarian Regimes. This year’s program will be as interesting as the one from the last year. You can hear true life stories of political prisoners, learn about the Iron Curtain and what toll it took on many people during the communist regime, K 231 – a committee for rehabilitation of former political prisoners, first victims of the totalitarian regime executed for political reasons due to fabricated accusations, priceless documents, photos, and letters and diaries of political prisoners that were treasured by family members for generations. The festival also includes concerts, poetry, movies, speeches, documentaries, performances for schools, and interesting discussions between visitors and organizers of the festival.

Dne 23. února začal třetí ročník mezinárodního festivalu proti totalitě jménem “Mene Tekel.” Tato kulturní akce provázející české předsednictví v EU bude trvat jeden týden. Během této doby si lidé mohou znovu vyslechnout vzpomínky a svědectví bývalých politických vězňů. Festival také bude zahrnovat umělecké ztvárnění totalitního režimu ve formě filmu, knih od žijících legend, veršů uvězněných mužů a žen, a také budete moci zhlédnout totalitu z pohledu historiků a mnohem více.

Tento režim vzal nejen práva milionů lidí, ale i jejich majetek a svobodu. Okolo 200 tisíc lidí bylo odsouzeno z politických důvodů a téměř 300 z nich bylo popraveno. Je těžké zapomenout tuto historii a tento festival slouží jako informační nástroj pro lidi všech věkových kategorií, aby je informoval o nezapomenutelné minulosti České republiky.

Festival pořádá občanské sdružení Umění bez bariér, hlavní město Praha, Konfederace politických vězňů České republiky a Ústavu pro studium totalitních režimů. ZDE se dozvíte více o patronech, spolupracujících organizacích, institucích a programech.

Letošní program bude stejně zajímavý, jako ten z minulého roku. Můžete slyšet pravdivé osudy politických vězňů, dozvědět se o železné oponě, co to znamenalo žít v komunistickém režimu, o K 231 - komisi pro rehabilitaci bývalých politických vězňů, prvních obětech totalitního režimu, které byly popraveni z politických důvodů díky falešným obviněním, o neocenitelných dokumentech, fotografiích a dopisech a denících od politických vězňů, které byli přechovávány mezi rodinnými příslušníky po celé generace. Součástí festivalu jsou také koncerty, básně, filmy, projevy, dokumenty, představení pro školy, a zajímavé diskuze mezi návštěvníky a organizátory festivalu.
