Masopust (Feast) and Lent (Fasting) Together? (Hody (Masopust) a Půst Dohromady?)

February 26, 2009

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na “Read the rest …”)

The traditional Czech carnival, called “Masopust” should end the night before Ash Wednesday that is known to be the first day of Lent - a period of fasting. This year, however, it was extended. The Old Town Square in Prague is still full of music and folklore ensembles. The carnival actually started on Ash Wednesday and, therefore, it is overlapping with the period of fasting from food and festivities. Why? There are two simple reasons behind it.

This carnival is one of the most anticipated holidays in the Czech Republic, but also Slovakia. It usually ends by a symbolic burial of a contrabass (see the video below) on Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday). The next day, Ash Wednesday, starts the traditional Lent period that lasts until Easter. On this day, priests burn one year old twigs called Kocicky and use this ash for blessing people during masses. This forty-day-long period is associated with prayers and fasting from certain types of food and all festivities. During this time, you should also be aware of Satan temptations.

This year’s Masopust is not exactly following the Czech religious traditions; however, the Old Town Square is filled with tourists, including local residents. The kiosks are full of good food, including cakes, sausages, and other traditional products of Czech villages. You can also hear old traditional songs sung by folklore ensembles or by harmonica players.

Why is this event overlapping with Lent? The organizers mentioned that they wanted to extend this traditional carnival by one more week but they also admitted it was due to scheduling issues with the city of Prague.
