Do You Celebrate IWD? (Slavíte MDŽ?)

March 8, 2009

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na “Read the rest …”)

March 8th can be remembered differently amongst Czechs and Slovaks at home or abroad. This day used to be known as International Woman’s Day (IWD). It started as a political event and later it was mostly associated with the communist regime and red carnations. This holiday is similar to Mother’s Day and St. Valentine’s Day. It disappeared from our calendars for a while, but now it is back to bring awareness of the struggles and achievements of women around the world. Will you be one of people, who celebrate this day?

The first IWD actually started in the United States and was initiated by the Socialist Party of America; however, it was not celebrated on the 8th of March. This day was re-invented during industrialization to protest over working conditions that women struggled with. Based on urban legend, there was a protest on the 8th of March, 1857 in New York City by women working in clothing and textile factories. Their protest led to the formation of labor unions in the same month two years later. Fifty years later, more protests were observed. In 1910, the first international women’s conference was held in Copenhagen and IWD was established.

Today’s date was assigned to IWD after WWI. The Soviet Union, as well as other countries around the world, made it an official holiday and the Czech Republic and Slovakia also followed this trend. After the fall of Communism in the Czech Republic, the holiday was not celebrated for a while; probably due to its reminder of the communist regime. Today, however, the holiday is back thanks to proposals from Socialists and Communists and it is still a heated subject in the Czech Parliament.

How is this day celebrated? Usually with a bouquet. This is the only day where all women - single, married, childless, or mothers receive flowers from their friends, husbands, or children. How about you? Do you celebrate this day? If yes, send an E-card right HERE.

Cauko! I was actually reminded about IWD from my Colombian

Cauko!

I was actually reminded about IWD from my Colombian girlfriend (she was bit irritated that nobody in her office knew what it was). Turns out, this holiday is quite huge around the world. Not so much here in the US. I guess here Mother’s Day plays the role that IWD plays oversees.
