You would never think that politicians and scandals would be found in the same sentence as charity but actually that very thing occurred in the following event. It all started three years ago when Miroslav Macek slapped David Rath’s head from behind at a Dentists’ Chamber conference. The fact that the whole act was caught on cameras makes it quite embarrassing; especially, since it happened just two weeks before parliamentary elections. The whole incident was resolved in court and a penalty for the act raised a large amount of money that actually aided several children from a local foster home.

Let’s go back to bring more details to the whole story. As we already mentioned, the embarrassing act happened at a Dentists’ Chamber conference. Before that, the former health minister and the member of the Social Democrats (CSSD, left wing party), Dr. David Rath, made an inappropriate comment on Dr. Miroslav Macek’s personal life, a former deputy head of the Civic Democrats (ODS, right wing party). Rath said that Macek got married for financial profit. Macek did not like the comment and warned Rath that he will handle the comment “just like men do.”

As you can see in the video above, Rath did not leave the room and confronted Macek for being a coward for slapping him from behind and almost started a fight. The whole case went to court and then to the High Court in Prague (since the previous verdict was not sufficient), where the judge decided that Macek has to publicly apologize to Rath and pay him 100,000 crowns in compensation.  The verdict just took effect on February 17^th, 2009.

Many people did agree with Macek’s behavior and he himself stated that he did not regret slapping Rath. You can also find reenactments on YouTube or supporters on FaceBook that even raised money for another slap. One organization, called Memorandum, decided to raise money for the financial punishment but not to support this kind of behavior in politics. Macek himself donated the whole amount of 100,000 crowns, but a total of 560 people contributed to a final amount of 207,264 crowns. The lowest contribution was 5 crowns and the highest 5500 crowns, making an average of 370 crowns per individual.

One check for 100,000 crowns was given to a foster home in Dolni Pocernice yesterday for a national sports competition. The other 100,000 crowns was given to David Rath. He stated that this money will go to his charity. The remaining money will be sent to the foster home additionally.

As you can see, even an embarrassing moment in politics can bring something good. Because of this incident, underprivileged children will enjoy sports activities with great prizes. Apparently, the combination of politicians, scandals, and charities can sometimes blend nicely, but this is just one case out of many that actually ended quite well.

Člověk by si nikdy nemyslet, že by se politici a skandály nacházely ve stejné větě jako charita, ale ve skutečnosti se udál jeden příběh, v kterém byste našli všechny tyto tři slova dohromady. Všechno začalo před třemi lety, kdy na sjezdu zubařů Miroslav Macek praštil Davida Ratha zezadu do hlavy. Skutečnost, že celý akt byl zachycen na kamery je dosti trapná, zvláště vzhledem k tomu, že se tak stalo jen dva týdny před parlamentními volbami. Celý incident byl vyřešen u soudu a trest za tento úkon vynesl velké množství peněz, které podpoří několik dětí z místního dětského domova.

Pojďme zpět k začátku celého příběhu. Jak jsme se již zmínili, tento trapas se stal na stomatologické konferenci. Před tím, bývalý ministr zdravotnictví a člen sociálních demokratů (ČSSD, levé křídlo), Dr. David Rath, nevhodně komentoval osobní život Dr. Miroslava Macka, bývalého místopředsedy občanských demokratů ( ODS, pravé křídlo). Rath řekl, že se Macek oženil pro finanční zisk. Mackovi se tento komentář nelíbil a varoval Ratha, že zareaguje na tento komentář “stejně, jak to dělají ostatní muži.”

Jak můžete vidět ve videu v anglické verzi textu výše, Rath neopustil místnost a naopak konfrontoval Macka, že je zbabělec, protože ho uhodil zezadu a téměř začal fyzický boj. Celý případ šel k soudu a pak i k Vrchnímu soudu v Praze (předchozí verdikt nebyl dostatečný), kde soud rozhodl, že se Macek musí veřejně Rathovi omluvit a také mu musí zaplatit 100.000 korun jako odškodné. Verdikt právě vstoupil v platnost dne 17. února 2009.

Mnoho lidí souhlasilo s Mackovým chováním a on sám prohlásil, že pohlavku nelituje. Na YouTube můžete také najít napodobeniny této události a na Facebooku lidé vybírají peníze na další pohlavek. Jedna organizace, jménem Memorandum, se rozhodla vybrat peníze na tento finanční postih, ale ne na podporu tohoto typu chování v politice. Macek sám daroval celou částku 100.000 korun, ale celkem 560 lidí přispělo ke konečné částce 207.264 korun. Nejnižší vklad byl 5 korun a nejvyšší byl 5500 korun, což v průměru činilo 370 korun na osobu.

Jeden šek na 100.000 korun byl včera předán dětskému domovu Dolní Počernice na celostátní sportovní soutěž. V dalších 100.000 korun bylo dáno Davidu Rathovi. Rath prohlásil, že tyto peníze půjdou na jeho charitativní projekt. Zbývající finanční prostředky budou dodatečně zaslány dětskému domovu.

Jak vidíte, i trapné chvíle v politice mohou přinést něco dobrého. Kvůli tomuto incidentu, se znevýhodněné děti budou těšit ze sportovních aktivit se skvělými cenami. Zdá se, že kombinace politiků, skandálů a charity může pěkně splývat, ale tohle byl jen jeden případ z mnoha, který skutečně skončil poměrně dobře.
