Czech documentaries are gaining popularity more than ever before. This year was the first time Czech documentaries were added to the Czech Lion competition and were introduced in two categories. The first category was used to award the three best Czech documentaries from the period of 1993 through 2007. The second category was the best documentary of 2008. The criteria for selection were very simple. They had to be at least 50 minutes in length and had to be introduced to the public in public theatres. If you live in the Czech Republic, you have a chance to watch some of the Czech Lion Award documentaries for free. Everybody should, however, visit the portal we introduce below since it offers a great selection of documentaries for a negligible fee.

There were twelve documentaries selected for the first award we mentioned above: Bohemia Docta by Karel Vachka, Czech Dream by Filip Remunda and Vit Klusak, Dust Games by Martin Marecek, God’s Stone Quarry by Bretislav Rychlik, Marcela by Helena Trestikova, The Unseen by Miroslav Janek, Nonstop by Jan Gonola jr., Searching for Ester by Vera Chytilova, The Power of Good: Nicholas Winton by Matej Minac, The Rite of Spring by Jana Sevcikova, Lost Holiday by Lucie Kralova, and The Beauty Exchange by Erika Hnikova. As we already announced in our last article, the three winners were: Czech Dream, Marcela, and The Power of Good: Sir Nicholas Winton. Films nominated for the second category were Ghetto Called Baluty by Pavel Stingl, Rene by Helena Trestikova, and Citizen Havel by Pavel Koutecky and Miroslav Janek that won the prize.

A new portal called Doc Alliance Films offers some of the Czech Lion Award documentaries for free until March 22^nd. This offer is only available to viewers in the Czech Republic; however, the portal has hundreds of Czech, Slovak, Polish, German, etc. documentaries to pick from for an affordable price. Unfortunately, we were not successful even when paying for these films: The Beauty Exchange, The Power of Good, Citizen Havel, Czech Dream, Ghetto Called Baluty, Macela, and Rene. The portal operators told us that they did not receive rights to distribute films from the Czech Lion competition for fee or purchase outside the Czech Republic. Nevertheless, there are more great documentaries available that are worth paying for. As of today, you can view 96 documentaries from the Czech Republic and 23 from Slovakia. The portal is easy to use and is available in Czech, English, French, German, Polish, and Danish Languages and even offers a submission form for your own films for evaluation and placement on the web.

České dokumentární filmy získávají stále větší popularitu. V letošním roce byly české dokumenty poprvé přidány do soutěže o Českého Lva, a byly zavedeny ve dvou kategoriích. První kategorie byla použita na ocenění tří nejlepších českých dokumentů z období od roku 1993 až do roku 2007. Do druhé kategorie byly zařazeny nejlepší dokumenty roku 2008. Kritéria pro výběr byla velmi jednoduchá. Musely být alespoň 50 minut dlouhé a byly již představeny veřejnosti v kinech. Pokud žijete v České republice, máte možnost shlédnout některé z filmů nominovaných na Českého lva úplně zdarma. Doporučujeme ale všem navštívit níže uvedený portál, protože nabízí velký výběr dokumentů za zanedbatelný poplatek.

Celkem dvanáct filmů bylo nominováno do první kategorii výše jmenované: Bohemia Docta od Karla Vachka, Český sen od Filipa Remundy a Víta Klusáka, Hry prachu od Martina Marečka, Kamenolom boží od Břetislava Rychlíka, Marcela od Heleny Třeštíkové, Nespatřené od Miroslava Janka, Nonstop od Jana Gonoly ml., Pátráni po Ester od Věry Chytilové, Síla lidskosti: Nicholas Winton od Matěje Mináče, Svěcení jara od Jany Ševčíkové, Ztracená dovolená od Lucie Králové a Ženy pro měny od Eriky Hníkové. Jak jsme se již zmínili v našem posledním článku, třemi vítězi se stali: Český sen, Marcela a Síla lidskosti: Sir Nicholas Winton. Filmy nominované do druhé kategorii byly Ghetto jménem Baluty od Pavla Štingla, René od Heleny Třeštíkové a Občan Havel od Pavla Kouteckého a Miroslava Janka, který také cenu vyhrál.

Nový portál, nazvaný Doc Alliance Films, nabízí některé z nominovaných dokumentárních filmů na Českého lva zdarma až do 22. března. Tato nabídka je k dispozici pouze pro diváky v České republice, ale portál obsahuje stovky českých, slovenských, polských, německých, atd. dokumentárních filmů, které si můžete vybrat za dostupnou cenu. Bohužel nebyli jsme úspěšní ani zaplatit za tyto filmy: Ženy za měny, Síla lidskosti, Občan Havel, Český sen, Ghetto jménem Baluty, Macela, a René. Operátoři portálu nám sdělili, že nezískali práva na distribuci filmů ze soutěže Českého lva ani zdarma a ani za poplatek mimo území České republiky. Nicméně existují další skvělé dokumenty, které stojí za to si je zaplatit. V současné době můžete zhlédnout celkem 96 dokumentů z České republiky a 23 ze Slovenska. Orientace a hledáni v portálu je velmi jednoduchá a je k dispozici v češtině, angličtině, francouzštině, němčině, polštině a dánštině a dokonce nabízí formulář pro přihlášení vašeho vlastního filmu k vyhodnocení a umístění na web.
