Culture Shock I (Kulturní Šok I.)

April 6, 2009

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na “Read the rest …”)

We are starting a new series of articles to describe culture shock that we, Czechs and Slovaks, experience abroad. It is not easy to learn to understand different cultures and accepting them can seem impossible. Hopefully, our posts will make it easier for you to cope with different cultures and help you understand why things are the way they are. This will, however, require your input as well. One or two individuals can’t describe different situations that many of us may encounter while living abroad. Therefore, we hope that you all will help us to capture situations, experiences, and solutions related to culture shock.

Before we write our first post on this topic, we would like to start with a short and hopefully exciting lecture:

Everybody, who enters a new culture, experiences culture shock.  The stages and severity can differ between individuals. The initial impression of a new culture comes with an excitement about something new that we have not seen or experience before. It is called “a honeymoon stage.” Later on, however, the good feelings can change to anxiety and criticism. Everything that was exotic and different can seem too difficult to understand, including the language, behaviors, thinking, etc.  How long it takes to adjust to a new culture differs from one individual to another. Then, the behaviors of others are already understood, accepted, or even preferred.

We can continue describing individual steps of culture shock, but instead, we have great videos for you that were recorded at the Columbia Business School during orientation for international students. The presenter is a student from Izrael that talks about his own experiences from living in the United States.

Enjoy!

Každý, kdo vstoupí do nové kultury, prožije kulturní šok.
