An Easter to Remember (Nezapomenutelné Velikonoce)

April 11, 2009

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na “Read the rest …”)

Here is one personal story about Easter in the Czech Republic:

This Easter I was reminded of a trip to the Czech Republic during April of 1998. I remember sitting outside of the cabin at my relatives’ garden plot enjoying the warmer days after a pretty cold winter. My enjoyment was short lived when all of a sudden a group of young men approached our garden like an army commando and before I could take in the situation they were whipping my female cousin and her mom. I was completely in shock ready to defend them but when they began to douse them with water I soon realized that although they were screaming somehow they were not in peril from these would-be assailants.

This would come to be my first exposure to the Czech tradition of pomlazka, a centuries old Easter tradition. As a US born Czech, nothing I learned in my US upbringing could prepare me for what I witnessed that Easter day in 1998. Maybe this experience could be an addition to our culture shock articles.

In the Czech Republic, Easter has some similarities to traditions practiced in the US. The traditions are rooted in the religious celebration of Easter, although in the Czech Republic Easter is more of a celebration of Spring and new life than a religious experience. On the other hand, traditions like coloring eggs are also shared with those of the US. Other aspects of Easter go back to pagan rituals, evident in the whipping of woman and dousing with water to drive bad spirits away and promote their youth for the remainder of the year.

Tradice mají kořeny v náboženských oslavách Velikonoc, i když v České republice jsou Velikonoce více oslavou jara a nového života, než náboženské tradice.
