As we, Czechs living in the USA, Canada, England, Australia, etc. , are trying to assimilate in a new country, the expats in the Czech Republic are doing exactly the same. Today, English is spoken in many countries or it is taught as a second language. For example, 89% of students in the European Union learn English as their second language. We can’t say the same about the Czech language. It is not only rarely taught in Europe and other foreign counties, but it is also one of the hardest languages to learn. If we add our culture, customs, and traditions to this learning experience, we can talk about enormous culture shock and a tough life in the Czech Republic for any foreigner from around the world. Luckily, there are online resources to help others to learn about the country and life in the Czech Republic. The new Brno ExPats Forum does exactly that and it was created by two expats living and working in Brno.

The site was launched in late 2008 and has grown rapidly since then. This Internet community provides information, help, and other resources for foreigners living in and around the city of Brno. It includes an active discussion forum, useful articles, polls, Czech news in English, a services directory and classified advertising. “When I arrived in Brno I had so many questions about how to set up a business, learn the language, where to live and so on. I also naturally wanted to find other English speakers for some social activities and it was difficult,” said Gary M. Vasey, native of Texas, USA, and the site co-founder. “The Brno ExPats Forum offers all of those things and more and should prove to be a tremendous resource for foreigners in Brno.”

Joe Atkinson, a long-time Brno resident and the site co-founder, explained “In the last few years the international profile of Brno has risen dramatically in many areas of life. For example the city’s universities play host to overseas students from many countries and a large number of international companies have invested in the area. I believe that now is the right time for an online English language resource such as www.brnoexpats.com to serve the needs of all these communities”.

As CzechFolks.com attracted Czechs and Slovaks at home, the Brno ExPats Forum has done exactly the same with Czech speakers. The site attracts everybody, who wishes to practice their English. Moreover, it attracts people that lived overseas themselves and foreigners living overseas who have some affinity for Brno and Moravia. The Brno ExPats Forum is also a great resource for us, CzechFolks.com, since we will work together with the site co-founders to bring you great articles related to expat life, the Czech Republic and the USA, and other areas to bridge the gaps between both of the countries and their residents.
