Culture Shock II (Kulturní šok II.)

April 15, 2009

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na “Read the rest …”)

Today, we have a story that is somehow relevant to our Culture Shocks series. The article reminds us that you should not forget to distinguish things you learn in a foreign country. Just a simple date format that you re-learn abroad can cause a huge mistake that can even be very costly:

A Date to Remember

“My sister in the Czech Republic wrote me a letter inviting me to her son’s wedding. She stated in her letter: “We are preparing for a wedding on 5. 9. and we hope to see you there.” I immediately booked my flight. I had some miles collected on one of my credit cards. I was able to get a free ticket and still ended up with some leftover miles. I emailed my other sister with the news. The next day I received a very bad email. My sister told me that the wedding is on the 5th of September and not 9th of May! To my bad luck, both of the dates fell on Saturday this year. I was so used to writing the month first followed by the day that I did not even think it would be the opposite. In addition, the statement “preparing” sounded very pressing. The next day I called my agent to change my ticket to September. This time, however, I had to pay and this simple mistake so far had cost me $700. I also made changes to my work schedule so the cost to this trip can be even higher. Too bad I can’t enjoy the feeling from traveling for free.” NN

The story is true and quite sad, but we believe that the trip will be worth the cost because family visits to the home country are priceless.
