June 10th has been a sad day of remembrance in the history of the Czech village Lidice since the year 1942. The story still touches many people, even though it happened more than 60 years ago. On that day Nazis murdered Lidice men and boys over the age of 15 years old. The Women and girls were sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp and about 100 children were sent to Gneisenau concentration camp, where only some of them later ended up in Nazi orphanages. Others were killed or died due to poor health. The village physically disappeared and was erased in German maps. The tragic act happened based on a false accusation that some Lidice residents were involved in the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich; also known as “the man with the iron hearth.”

The Nazis took away everything of value, the cattle were herded away and the village was then “deleted from the map.” All houses were destroyed, orchards were dug up and graveyards were desecrated. The land was ploughed flat like the town never existed before. The Gestapo and SS did not stop there. The Heydrich death also resulted in the killing of about 3000 Jews that were deported from the ghetto to Theresienstadt for extermination.

The story of the Lidice children is one of the saddest. Only 17 out of 102 children transported out of the village ever returned back home. During their stay in Gneisenau in Poland, many of them suffered from illnesses and lack of hygiene. Some of them were chosen for Germanization and others were killed at Chelmno extermination camp. The sculpture of 82 Lidice children was built in their honor and it overlooks the original Lidice village that was re-housed shortly after World War II. The memorial says “The Memorial to the Children Victims of the War.”

10. červen je již od roku 1942 smutným dnem v historii české obce Lidice. Příběh se stále dotýká mnoha lidí, i když se odehrál před více než 60 lety. Tento den nacisté zavraždili v Lidicích muže a chlapce nad 15 let. Ženy a dívky byly zaslány do koncentračního tábora Ravensbrück. Kolem 100 dětí bylo zasláno do koncentračního tábora Gneisenau, kde pouze některé z nich byly později poslány do nacistických dětských domovů. Jiní byli zabiti nebo zemřeli kvůli špatnému zdravotnímu stavu. Obec fyzicky zmizela a byla i vymazána na německých mapách. Tato tragédie se stala na základě falešných obvinění, že někteří obyvatelé Lidic se podíleli na atentátu na Reinharda Heydricha, také známého jako “muž se železným srdcem”.

Nacisté sebrali všechno, co mělo nějakou hodnotu, vyhnali pryč dobytek a obec pak byla “vymazána z mapy”. Všechny domy byly zničeny, stromy byly vykopány a hřbitovy byly znesvěceny. Pozemky byly srovnány pluhem jako by vesnice nikdy předtím neexistovala. Gestapo a SS se tam ale zastavili. Smrt Heydricha také vedla k usmrcení asi 3000 Židů, kteří byli deportováni z ghetta na Theresienstadt pro hromadné vyhlazování.

Příběh Lidických dětí je jedním z nejsmutnějších. Pouze 17 ze 102 dětí přepravených z vesnice do tábora se vrátilo zpět domů. Během pobytu v Gneisenau v Polsku řada z nich utrpěla nemocemi a nedostatkem hygieny. Někteří z nich byli vybráni pro Germanizaci a další byli zabiti ve vyhlazovacím táboře v Chelmno. Sousoší s 82 Lidickými dětmi bylo postaveno na jejich počest, a to nad původní obcí Lidice, která byla obnovena krátce po druhé světové válce. Tento památník má titul “Památník dětským obětem války”.
