According to Czech Foreign Minister Jan Kohout, the chances that Canada would re-impose visa restrictions on Czechs are getting slimmer. The visa reinstatement came to mind after the massive refugee claims submissions in the past six months. The Czech Republic was the second highest country contributing about 1700 claims submitted between January and June 2009, right after Mexico with about 5500 claims during the same time period. The Roma, also known as Gypsies, complain about living conditions and racism, however, others believe that they only seek asylum in Canada for its generous welfare system and due to the lenient immigration laws.

Recent polls have shown that more than two-thirds of Czechs have negative opinions of the Roma. The Roma say that they face constant threats of neo-Nazi assaults. It is hard to distinguish between truthful refugee claims and opportunists that seek asylum in Canada. Moreover, it seems like Romas don’t receive much support from the Czech government. For example, the former Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek stated that the Roma sought asylum in Canada for economic reasons, rather than a true asylum.

How is the problem seen on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean? The Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper raised the possibility of re-imposing the visa requirement for Czech visitors. He also believes that the asylum-seekers are opportunists seeking a more financially rewarding life. The Immigration Minister Jason Kenney believes that the increase in number of refugees come from the abuse of the Canadian immigration system. On the other hand, the U.S. immigration system does not allow rejected applicants to appeal or obtain a temporary work permit as is allowed in Canada.

Right now, there are still no changes for Czech travelers, and we can only hope visa free travel to Canada will remain.

Podle českého ministra zahraničí, Jana Kohouta, je jen malá šance, že Kanada znovu zavede vízová omezení pro Čechy. Obnovení vízové povinnosti přišlo na mysl díky obrovskému návalu uprchlických žádostí o azyl v posledních šesti měsících. Česká republika byla druhou zemí s nejvyšším počtem žádostí (kolem 1700) od ledna do června 2009, a byla druhou zemí po Mexiku s 5500 žádostmi během stejného časového období. Romové, známí také jako “Cikáni, si stěžují na životní podmínky a rasismus, ovšem jiní se domnívají, že žádají o azyl v Kanadě, protože tento stát má velkorysý sociální systém a mírnější imigrační zákony.

Nedávný průzkum veřejného mínění ukázal, že více než dvě třetiny Čechů mají negativní názory na Romy. Romové tvrdí, že čelí neustálým hrozbám neonacistických útoků. Je těžké rozlišit pravdivé uprchlíky od oportunistů, kteří usilují o azyl v Kanadě. Navíc se zdá, že Romové nemají ani podporu u české vlády. Například bývalý český premiér Mirek Topolánek uvedl, že Romové hledají azyl v Kanadě z ekonomických důvodů, a ne pro azyl.

Jak tento problém vypadá na druhé straně Atlantského oceánu? Kanadský premiér Stephen Harper hrozí obnovením vízové povinnosti pro české návštěvníky. Také se ale domnívá, že o azyl usilují oportunisté z finančních důvodů. Imigrační ministr Jason Kenney si ale myslí, že nárůst počtu uprchlíků je způsoben zneužíváním kanadského imigračního systému. Například USA neumožňuje uprchlíkům se odvolat na odmítnuté žádosti anebo získat dočasné pracovní povolení, jak je povoleno v Kanadě.

Češi ještě stále mohou cestovat do Kanady bez víza a my jen můžeme doufat, že to tak zůstane.
