Curiosities: Kofola – An Informative Refreshment (Kuriozity: Kofola – Informativní Osvěžení)

July 11, 2009

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na “Read the rest …”)

This article is just one of other future curiosities that we will periodically bring to you. Hopefully, they will refresh your mind but also teach you a little bit more about the Czech and Slovak country, culture and more. The story below caught our attention for its brilliant concept.

Beginning the 7th of July, 2009, drivers around the town Brno (the second largest city in the Czech Republic) have an opportunity to receive free drinks from the company “Kofola.” The cold drinks, such as Rajec, Top Topic or NESCAFÉ Xpress are distributed to drivers on the biggest intersections in Brno – on Herspicka Street, which is under construction. Actually, many parts of the city are now under construction making the drivers impatient. Not too many Czech drivers use GPS to drive around these congested areas, however, with the drink, they also receive a brochure with current and future construction sites and the traffic situation report in the area. After only two days, the company gave out about 9000 cold drinks and 8000 newsletters. The whole campaign will last until Tuesday next week but it will be interrupted during this weekend.

Kofola is a known brand in the minds of Czechs and Slovaks that lived in the country during communism. It represented an affordable imitation and rival of western capitalistic drinks, such as Coca Cola or Pepsi. It entered the market in the 1960s and it is still available and popular today. The product originated in the Czechoslovak pharmaceutical company “Galena” from the surplus of caffeine produced during the coffee roasting process. The resulting brownish syrup “Kofo” was thus used as the main ingredient of the Kofola soft drink.

The other ingredients of Kofola are extracts from apple, cherry, currant, herbal aroma, caramel, and sugar. In comparison with Coca-Cola and Pepsi, the drink contains 30% less sugar and more caffeine (17 mg/100 ml vs. 15 mg/100 ml) and it is not enriched with phosphoric acid, which causes calcium loss in our teeth. Kofola drinks evolved in the last couple of years. For example, you can find the new lemon-flavored “Kofola Citrus,” cinnamon-flavored “neKofola/joKofola,” cherry-flavored “Kofola Barborkova,” or sugarless “Kofola BEZ cukru.” If you would like to learn more about Kofola, click HERE.

We have to say, it was a great idea to pick the right city and products from a company that is becoming more and more popular thanks to a drink that many of us won’t soon forget and maybe even still crave today.

That’s a good marketing idea - it takes 20-30 minutes to ride through Heršpická st. these days (usual time was 5 minutes). One of my former collegues says that he is now looking forward to be stuck in the jam, because he always gets a nescafe.
