Clashes Between Slovak and Croat Soccer/Football Fans and More (Střety mezi Slovenskými a Chorvatskými fotbalovými fanoušky a více)

August 4, 2009

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na “Read the rest …”)

Who would guess that an ordinary soccer (US)/football match in Zilina, Slovakia, would catch our attention? It is probably because it was not that ordinary. Some sources called it the biggest crackdown by security forces in the history of Slovak football. The violent act happened on the last day of July and it involved the local police, but also its residents, neighboring businesses, Foreign Affair Ministers and Slovak tourists vacationing or living in Croatia.

The disturbance took place before the UEFA Europa League third preliminary-round match between home side MSK Zilina and the Croatian team Hajduk Split. The Croat fans were not allowed to enter the stadium because they had been banned from two European away games. They were involved in skirmishes in the town, where they threatened local citizens, attacked police officers and damaged local stores and other businesses on their way to the stadium. First, they tried to reason with the police, but their requests to attend the match were denied. A small fight turned into a massive fight that involved about 650 police officers.

The clash resulted in about 50 injured officers and about 20 seriously injured foreign fans and 30 others with minor injuries. A total of 219 arrested Croatian fans were expelled from the country and were banned from entering the European Union to watch matches for the next five years. Some of the fans claimed that the aggressiveness and violence used by the police during the intervention was inappropriate. The foreign ministers of both countries believe that suitable actions were taken in order to avoid a further disturbance.

The story is does not end here as the Slovak vacationers in Croatia experienced attacks and threats from the locals. The Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Jandrokovic promised that he will do everything he can to make sure that Slovak holiday-makers have a trouble-free stay in Croatia. One of incidents had already resulted in damage to a family car, while other insults could be found on the internet. Croatia is one of the most favorite spots abroad for both, the Czechs and Slovaks. Moreover, Slovaks make up the third largest minority of the Croatian population. We can only hope that this incident will not be a reason to destroy the close ties these two countries have had for many years in the past (since the 16th century). You can also find more about Croatian-Slovak ties in this interesting article HERE.

ITERESTING FACTS ABOUT CZECHS IN CROATIA:
Today, the Czech minority is largest in the region surrounding Daruvar in western Slavonia and in larger cities, like Zagreb, Rijeka, Bjelovar, Virovitica and a few other places, where this flag is used in accordance to the local legislation and the 2002 Contitutional Law:
The flag of the Czechs in Croatia is adopted formally in 2007, it is equal to the Czech national flag (but for the ratio): white over red bicolor with a blue triangle next to the hoist reaching to the middle of the flag, with overall ratio 2:3. The emblem of Czechs in Croatia is a shield with three fields, red, white and blue with red-white checkered base and a silver lion overall. Atop the shield is a yellow ribbon with inscription: “CEŠI V REPUBLICE CHORVATSKO/CESI U REPUBLICI HRVATSKOJ” (meaning “The Czechs in the Republic of Croatia” in Czech and Croatian language).
