Today, like every year, Czechs and Slovaks commemorate the infamous anniversary of the invasion of Czechoslovakia. On that day the former liberator put an end to Dubcek’s effort to build “socialism with a human face.” The invasion reflected the disapproval of the rebirth of social and political freedom known as “Prague Spring.” On the night of August 20 to 21, 1968, the country was invaded by five Warsaw Pact countries. On that day the Prague Spring ended and was followed by the cold “Brezhnev’s Doctrine” that brought a new chill to the Cold War. The “Détente” was over.

On this anniversary we decided to bring more attention to the impact of this event on Czechoslovak citizens and people that lived through this time. Below you can watch two documentaries that describe the past and also the feelings of people directly involved in this event.

The invasion, however, brought more that just emotional harm; even today Czechs and Slovaks relive those events. A total of 108 lives were lost from the day of the occupation till the end of that year. About 500 others were seriously injured and countless victims suffered other harm throughout the years of normalization.

Dnes, stejně jako každý rok, si Češi a Slováci připomínají neslavné výročí invaze Československa. V tento den bývalý osvoboditel ukončit snahu Dubčeka o vybudování “socialismu s lidskou tváří.” Invaze odrážela nesouhlas znovuzrození sociální a politické svobody známé jako “Pražské jaro”. V noci ze srpna 20 - 21 roku 1968 byla země napadena pěti státy Varšavské smlouvy. V tento den Pražské jaro skončilo a po něm následovala studená “Brežněvova doktrína”, která přinesla nový mráz do studené války. “Détente” byla u konce.

K tomuto výročí jsme se rozhodli přivést větší pozornost na dopad této události na československé občany a osoby, které toto období prožily. Výše můžete shlédnout dva dokumentární filmy, které popisují minulost a také pocity lidí, kteří se přímo podíleli na této akci. Níže uvádímě dva dokumentární snímky z československého filmovéh týdeníku natočeného přímo v tomoto období, který popisuje situaci a pocity lidí.
Invaze, ale přinesla více než jen emocionální škodu, kterou i dnes Češi a Slováci prožívají. Celkem 108 životů bylo ztraceno ode dne okupace do konce roku 1968. Asi 500 dalších bylo vážně zraněno a monoho dalších obětí utrpělo škodu behěm mnoha let normalizace.
