Jakub Cermin – a Political Prisoner and a Symbol of Freedom and Humanity (Jakub Čemin - politický vězeň a symbol svobody a humanity)

August 27, 2009

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na “Read the rest …”)

The number of people with deep national values and knowledge of Czech and Slovak history over the last half century is shrinking. One of the people that fell in this small margin of the Czech and Slovak population just passed away. Jakub Cermin (May 2nd, 1917 – August 27th, 2009), the former head of the Freedom Fighters, could really say a lot about his life experiences. As a matter of fact, he wrote hundreds of articles reflecting his memories, feelings, views, and hopes about our nation. His blindness, towards the end of his life, however, did not stop him as he still continued in sacrificing his life and dignity for our liberty until his passing.

Who was Jakub Cermin? There is not a short answer to this question, because his life was full of unexpected events. They taught him how to deal with difficult circumstances in his life, a life that many of us could not even imagine. If you would like to learn about World War II or the Communist regime, he had a wealth of information. Even though he was born during the World War I era (in Tyn nad Vltavou, which is a part of today’s Czech Republic), his life was greatly influenced by the Second World War. In 1939 he was taken to a concentration camp Sachsenhausen – Oranienburg along with his other fellow students that were members of the underground resistance movement against Nazis. For that he served three years in the concentration camp.

His life after the war was not any less eventful. After the liberation in 1945 he finished his Law degree at the Charles University in Prague; however, he did not really have a chance to practice it publically. Ironically, the very law he came to learn turned on him in 1952, when he was arrested and sentenced for allegedly cooperating with Milada Horakova, who was accused of being the leader of a supposed plot to overthrow the Communist regime and was hanged in Pankrac Prison on June 27th, 1950. After his release from the prison, Cermin was still not set free. The communist party continued on controlling his life for the next 11 years and humiliating him by allowing him to work only as cheap laborer.

Jakub Cermin’s devotion to freedom was noticeable throughout his whole life, but his public presentations became the most memorable during his times as the head of a group called Freedom Fighters. His public presence was also evident from his written articles that he published with various publishers. While many Czechs and Slovaks left their home country to pursue their freedom, Jakub Cermin fought for it throughout his whole life “on the front lines” face-to-face with his enemies.

Zatímco mnoho Čechů a Slováků opustilo svou domovskou zemi, aby získali svou svobodu, Jakub Čemín bojoval o svobodu po celý svůj život “v hlavní frontě” tváří v tvář svému nepříteli.

CLICK HERE if you would like to read one of his most recent articles about his disagreement with the election of Jan Fischer as the Premier of the Czech Republic, who happens to be a former member of the Czechoslovak Communist party. The story is written truly from his heart, but unfortunately only in Czech.
