The Russian song, set to a popular 1970s Czech tune Jozin z Bazin (Joey of the Marsh) by a Czech singer Ivan Mladek, is becoming trendier on YouTube in recent days. Today, over three million people have seen the video. The Russian lyrics say, “Putin, Putin goes to Pikalyovo. Putin, Putin will make it cool for us… Putin, Putin is quick to do justice. Putin, Putin is our Prime Minister… Jozin z Bazin is the people’s choice … oligarchs, miners and even cops know that Jozin z Bazin will be our new president.” The spoof song was made to make fun of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, a former KGB spy, who was ineligible to run for a third consecutive term as President in 2008 and became Prime Minister. While those of us living in countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom enjoy basic freedoms and democracy, there are still many people struggling for basic freedoms and human rights in societies which deny them. Their lives, however, can be changed thanks to the commitment of people and organizations to provide them with support and help.

One of the countries where civil liberties used to be deprived was, for example, the former Czechoslovakia. Based on today’s research and surveys, young generations lack a basic understanding of what it was like to live under the totalitarian regimeContinue reading

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na “Read the rest …”)

Helena Houdova is not only known as a Czech model but also as a philanthropist with a passion to help disadvantaged children around the world. Her charity named Sunflower Children is known around the world for helping many children thanks to the generous donations of people that attend her events and galas in many foreign countries: poker events, golf outings, film festivals and more. Just yesterday, Houdova started a new campaign right on the New York Times Square named Save a Baby from HIV, where people can text the word SUN to 90999 to donate $5 to her charity. The billboard depicts a woman holding a disadvantaged child with a very simple message to people willing to help. The woman on the image is the Czech model herself.

Politicians, Scandals, and Charities (Politici, Skandály a Charita)

Článek v ČEŠTINĚ dole (Klikněte na “Read the rest …”)

You would never think that politicians and scandals would be found in the same sentence as charity but actually that very thing occurred in the following event. It all started three years ago when Miroslav Macek slapped David Rath’s head from behind at a Dentists’ Chamber conference. The fact that the whole act was caught on cameras makes it quite embarrassing; especially, since it happened just two weeks before parliamentary elections. The whole incident was resolved in court and a penalty for the act raised a large amount of money that actually aided several children from a local foster home.

Another Commercial St. Valentine? (Další Komerční Den Svatého Valentýna?)

St. Valentine’s Day is still a relatively new holiday in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This day was originally associated with love and feelings, but today it is mostly associated with shopping. This year might be different, though. Even though the Czech market is overwhelmed by items associated with this holiday, the Czechs will probably spend less and instead of going to restaurants, they will probably eat at home instead. The neighboring Slovaks won’t shop as much either but a recent public opinion poll showed that it will be probably due to their disfavor of this holiday. No matter what your financial situation is or how you feel about this holiday, there are other meaningful ways that you can celebrate this day and maybe do something good for others.

Three Kings (www.studenec.cz)

Based on Czech and Slovak traditions, today is the last day, also known as the twelfth day, of Christmas. The 6th of January is celebrated as the Three Kings Day. During this day you can see children walking the streets caroling in their neighborhoods. It is also common today for many organizations to use this festive day for humanitarian activities to help others.

The three kings of three different countries, also known as wise men from the east, saw a bright star on the night when Christ was born. They followed it to Bethlehem and met the baby Jesus, to whom they gave three gifts: gold, myrrh and frankincense. Their names were Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. Based on biblical stories, the three men represented three life stages – history, presence, and future (young, middle-aged, and old king). The oldest man also had a dark face that represented the shadow of death. Continue reading

The monument was destroyed by the Nazis in 1941 and was forgotten for more than 60 years. A new project, initiated by American Friends of the Czech Republic (AFoCR), will renew this monument in Prague to remind us of the close ties the Czech Republic and United States share.

How To Get Money To Family and Friends in Europe (Jak Poslat Penize Rodine a Pratelum v Evrope)

Clanek v CESTINE dole (Kliknete na “Read the rest of this entry”)

One of the problems that we have had in the past was getting money to our family in the Czech Republic. It used to be that you could only use Western Union or send cash with somebody travelling to Europe. Western Union works well but they charge a large fee for this transaction. We solved this problem in two different ways:

1) We requested a second ATM/Debit Card from our CU(Credit Union)/Bank and sent it to our relatives in Europe.

 2) We opened an account at a CU/Bank with our relative present and added them to the account.
