Czech documentaries are gaining popularity more than ever before. This year was the first time Czech documentaries were added to the Czech Lion competition and were introduced in two categories. The first category was used to award the three best Czech documentaries from the period of 1993 through 2007. The second category was the best documentary of 2008. The criteria for selection were very simple. They had to be at least 50 minutes in length and had to be introduced to the public in public theatres. If you live in the Czech Republic, you have a chance to watch some of the Czech Lion Award documentaries for free. Everybody should, however, visit the portal we introduce below since it offers a great selection of documentaries for a negligible fee.

The results are in! On March 7^th, the Czech Lion awards revealed winners from each category. As predicted, Karamazovs, Tobruk, and Country Teacher received more than one award, but Hlidac c.47 was also very successful. The best documentary category debuted and the main figure, Vaclav Havel, was also present.

About fifteen years ago, a new show called Alles Gute emerged with Milan Steindler and David Vavra. It was a parody of formal German courses from the 90s that lasted on television screens for four years. The show was a part of the television program called Ceska soda that was cancelled for its politically incorrect humor. Now it is back but on the Internet and will be aired every two weeks. The first part of the series (12 of them total) has already been aired on Stream.cz and another one will be available this Sunday. You can watch it at the end of this article. How do you like their comeback?

On February 23rd, a third year of the international festival against totalitarianism “Mene Tekel” has started. The cultural event accompanying the Czech presidency in the EU Council will last one week. During this time, people will revisit memories and hear testimonies of former political prisoners. The festival will also include artistic reflections of totalitarianism in films, books by living legends, verses of imprisoned men and woman, historians’ views, and much more.

The title probably does not make sense to all of you that did not hear about the project “Transparency 2009.” This project started in the beginning of January and it will last throughout the Czech Presidency over the EU. The light creations introduce new visions and ideas of six different artists from different countries. The fifth exhibition by Ulla Rauter just started and illuminates the Vltava River every night after midnight. To us, this is the most interesting exhibit out of all five already displayed and it can really bring peace to your mind through the creative idea behind it.

You may ask, “What was so special about her?” We would reply that it was her determination and passion to express her inner beauty by works of art. Moreover, her artistic expressions started much later in her life and all her techniques were completely self-taught. Her work was and still is admired at home and also around the world, and her willingness to explore new things could inspire many of us, expatriates.

This week’s Friday night was special for all fans of Czech movies. The Czech Film and Television Academy revealed their nominations for the Czech Lion awards. The contest, which is very much similar to the American Oscars awards, revealed thirteen different categories but the movies selected in each of them did not seem to vary. The list of top movies looked rather repetitive giving us, viewers, less imagination about who will be the top winners in March 2009.

The top best movies nominations were the Karamazovs, Tobruk and Country Teacher. The same movies were also nominated in other categories:  best music, director, and script. On the other hand, this year’s nominations brought more variety by bringing a new category of the best documentary. You can view the nominations in the list at the end of the article.

To mark its presidency over the EU, the Czech government wanted to create a sculpture of all countries, named Entropa, of the European Union. These pieces of art were supposed to be the work of artists from each country of the union. David Cerny, a Czech artist was selected as the leader of this project that would be displayed in Brussels, Belgium. When the final work was revealed, it not only shocked everybody due to the fact that the only author of this work was Cerny and his affiliates, but the sculpture itself humiliated several countries, such as Germany, Latvia, or Bulgaria. Many European artists wanted to react to Entropa and created caricatures of the Czech Republic through their eyes.
