Zdenek Sverak is well known in the Czech entertainment world. This Czech actor, humorist, and writer found his new niche – writing books. Sverak was born on March 28th, 1936 in Prague. He studied pedagogy at Charles University in Prague. Throughout his career he was an author of several musical texts and also plays. He, however, never fulfilled his dream to write books with short stories. It was only recently that he fulfilled his dream when he finally wrote his book called “Povidky” that contains stories from times from 1966 till 2008. The book is full of humor, honesty, and meanings that will keep readers interested and entertained.

If you live abroad and are not familiar with Czech entertainment, you may have still heard of Zdenek Sverak. Among his famous film scripts stands out one written for a movie called “Kolja” (Kolya) – Academy Award winning film in 1996 that he also starred in. This was the second film he worked on with his son and director Jan Sverak after their first film “The Elementary School” that was nominated for an Academy Award. Originally we thought we would introduce two cultural events to you; one from the Czech Republic and one from the USA. The event in the Czech Republic, called Angel 2008, was a music award event. The other one would have been an international festival in Los Angeles, California, that was opened by a Czech movie selected out of 124 films from countries around the world. They both caught our attention for their impact on the Czech entertainment world but also because they shared one common word. Los Angeles is a Spanish word that means “The Angels” in English. How coincidental? Unfortunately, Czech Television made a mistake in their video since the festival is actually happening in Tiburon, located in the San Francisco Bay, but it is unexpectedly related to angels as well. Czech documentaries are gaining popularity more than ever before. This year was the first time Czech documentaries were added to the Czech Lion competition and were introduced in two categories. The first category was used to award the three best Czech documentaries from the period of 1993 through 2007. The second category was the best documentary of 2008. The criteria for selection were very simple. They had to be at least 50 minutes in length and had to be introduced to the public in public theatres. If you live in the Czech Republic, you have a chance to watch some of the Czech Lion Award documentaries for free. Everybody should, however, visit the portal we introduce below since it offers a great selection of documentaries for a negligible fee.

The results are in! On March 7^th, the Czech Lion awards revealed winners from each category. As predicted, Karamazovs, Tobruk, and Country Teacher received more than one award, but Hlidac c.47 was also very successful. The best documentary category debuted and the main figure, Vaclav Havel, was also present.

This week’s Friday night was special for all fans of Czech movies. The Czech Film and Television Academy revealed their nominations for the Czech Lion awards. The contest, which is very much similar to the American Oscars awards, revealed thirteen different categories but the movies selected in each of them did not seem to vary. The list of top movies looked rather repetitive giving us, viewers, less imagination about who will be the top winners in March 2009.

The top best movies nominations were the Karamazovs, Tobruk and Country Teacher. The same movies were also nominated in other categories:  best music, director, and script. On the other hand, this year’s nominations brought more variety by bringing a new category of the best documentary. You can view the nominations in the list at the end of the article.

This Sunday the Czech audience will have a great opportunity to watch a new television movie premiere called “Kanadska Noc” (Canadian Night) with Dagmar Havlova, the wife of the former president of the Czech Republic - Vaclav Havel. The dramatic story is about two parents that lose their only son during his studies in Canada. This film, which will certainly touch the hearts of many viewers, is directed by Zdenek Zelenka and it is based on a true story.

Last night, again just a coincidence, we discovered another American film shot in the Czech Republic - called The Illusionist. Immediately after the first minutes of the film, we found the places, where the story took place, very familiar. On the basis of a scenario, the story took place in Vienna; however, the whole movie was shot in Prague, Tabor, Česky Krumlov and other Czech places.
