Do you still remember going to Czech restaurants and pubs with tacky decorations, dirty walls, sticky tables or dirty tablecloths with set in stains? The food from that era was very simple, maybe too oily or salty, but very cheap. In places like this you could find interesting people and an atmosphere that was much different form the one you may experience today. This week you can find a restaurant like this in Prague 3 called “U dvou Hrabalu” on Chelcickeho 14 Street. The restaurant was re-designed to show what Czech or even Slovak pubs used to look like in the eighties or maybe even earlier times. Until Sunday, the visitors have a chance to go back in time to re-live the past that may have already been forgotten.

Collapsing Eiffel Tower or a Paris Rooftop scene? If you watched G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, you could see just that and more. Even though the set looked like it was located in Paris and other geographical locations, it was actually carefully designed in Prague. The motion picture is just another movie that was filmed in the Czech Republic, but one of the characters was played by the Czech supermodel and actress Karolina Kurkova, who is now expecting her first child with her fiancé Archie Drury. Many Czechs and Slovaks may not be familiar with this “Real American Hero” that has such long history in the American culture. Why the Czech Republic and who is G.I. Joe then? More than six years ago Pavel Bem, the mayor of Prague, informed the public of his intention to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2016. Even the former mayor of Prague, Jak Kasl, supported this idea when he signed a contract with the Czech Olympic Committee. Two years later Pavel Bem stated that this idea became a serious plan. As he stated, “Prague would become a special location to organize such an event that would bring lots of attention to the city,” but would it actually be able to host such an event? Today we don’t have to think about this question since the event organizers withdrew their plan due to the current economic crisis. Nevertheless, the Olympic candidacy has already cost the city about 70 million crowns. Was it a smart idea to withdraw or not? Continue reading →

The traditional Czech carnival, called “Masopust” should end the night before Ash Wednesday that is known to be the first day of Lent – a period of fasting. This year, however, it was extended. The Old Town Square in Prague is still full of music and folklore ensembles. The carnival actually started on Ash Wednesday and, therefore, it is overlapping with the period of fasting from food and festivities. Why? There are two simple reasons behind it.

Wilson monument in Prague

How many of you know that there was a monument to an American President in Prague? Yes, there was a statue of Woodrow Wilson located at the main train station in the center of Prague. The monument was destroyed by the Nazis in 1941 and was forgotten for more than 60 years. A new project, initiated by American Friends of the Czech Republic (AFoCR), will renew this monument in Prague to remind us of the close ties the Czech Republic and United States share.

Many of you living in the United States probably know that Macy’s is celebrating 150 years in business. However, how many of you know that the Czech Parliamentary Library (CPL) I celebrating the same anniversary just today? Its oldest document is dated to November 24, 1858. The CPL is located at the premises of the Czech Parliament Chamber and is the oldest administrative center of the House of Czech Parliament. Its electronic version also lets you to see documents from any part of the world in the form of text, images and also sounds. If you are interested in the history and political data of Czechoslovakia, it is worth your visit.

90th Anniversary of Foundation of Czechoslovakia Today (Dnes 90. Vyroci Zalozeni Ceskoslovenska)

Today, on 28th of October, Czech citizens will have a chance to see a two-hour parade to celebrate foundation of the independent Czechoslovakia. The parade will take place on Evropska Street in Prague 6 at 1 PM with 2,102 participants with 196 pieces of equipment.

 

The parade will include participation of the President of the Czech Republic, Czech defense minister, the Castle Guard units, Army of the Czech Republic, the Czech Republic Police, Fire and Rescue Services, Medical Rescue Services, and the City Police.

Hasal’s Family Priceless Gift (Nedocenitelny Dar Hasalovy Rodiny)

On September 4th, our Czech Ambassador in Washington, D.C. Petr Kolar, held a ceremony at which Dagmar White, daughter of General Antonin Hasal (1893 – 1960), donated her father’s WWII uniform to the permanent collection of the Military History Institute in Prague. This generous gift showed how much this family is still connected to the Czech Republic, Antonin Hasal’s home country.

 

General Hasal was born in 1893 in the Austro-Hungarian town Nova Hut pod Nizborem. During World War I, he was called to serve in the Austro-Hungarian Army but he decided to volunteer for the Czechoslovak legion in Russia. He returned to Czechoslovakia as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1920 and later he became Lieutenant General.
